sport (spôrt, sprt) n.

1. An active pastime; recreation that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

Of course there is the whole physical aspect of a sport, but it makes for a great debate.

With the World Cyber Games right around the corner..I'd say that's pretty competitive. What do you think?

DuFFMaN

i think that definition needs to be updated. IMO it needs to be physical. Gaming is definately competitive, but it isnt a sport.

Piscinex

sitting at your computer is about as physical as snooker, dart or bowls, all international sports.

04-07-2003, 02:56 PM
nah i dont think it is at all, altho it can b very competative and played for ridiculous sums of money like a lot of sports :p it isn't what i would class as a sport.

And chess is? Don't get me wrong, I'd hate to see nerds classified as sporters but there isn't that much of a difference.

it would be cool if gaming was a sport

Golf is a sport. If you think it is easy gl aand go out and stroke a few. It isnt anything like going out grabbing a baseball bat and smacking a ball. I grew up thinking the same thing but once I started playing it i changed my mind very fast.

A sport is usuallly classified asa something that is not 99% mental such as gaming. I dont know of anyone who considers chess a sport even though it is competitive requires a lot of strategy and demands alot of skill. It is just a game though :\

Back on topic.

I think the reason we've begun thinking like this is because we only have present video games in our minds. But think of previous decades' games for example. Can you claim that playing Pacman is a sport? How about Tetris? Just because today's FPS's seem so tense and wrist-strenuous, doesn't mean we can generally claim that video gaming is sporting. Also not all video games can be considered competitive. I mean FFS, think of Sim City for a second.

Kay who do you know that considers chess a sport? I dont know anyone that does.

And yeah, Swat is right golf is very hard, and I'd call it a sport. I'd also call bowling a sport although its a pansy one (but fun). Darts is not a sport IMO. But as much as we all wish it was ;), I dont think gaming can be considered a sport.

Chess is no more a sport than Monopoly is. Or tidly-winks. There is no phyical activity involved at all.

FFS, sitting in front of your computer is NOT a sport.

04-08-2003, 03:45 PM
IMO sport is in someway mentally AND physically testing. There's no physical pressure with computer gaming but with snooker there is, you have to have skill more than know where a ball will go, you need to hit it with the right amount of force and with golf not only do you have to walk miles but you got to have a swing which is why that's a sport as well.

well, i'd like to have animated chess pieces like the ones in harry potter but in the modern military version. soldiers as pawns, Tanks as rooks, Artilery as horses, commandos as bishops. I dont know what should the king or queen be....

Imo computer gaming is not really a sport, but its something you can be competitive in. But in the definition it says it can be an active pastime

It's amazing how some people are willing to shut down their common sense just to continue supporting a rediculous claim...

Sitting in front of a PC and not moving your body cannot be a sport.

All sports are games, but not all games are sports.

Board games and computer games are not sports. FFS.

cross-country is a sport, but i would not call it a game. same with figure skating, virtually any form of race, and sports where the winner is decided by a judge. i also would not call boxing a game :P

'It isnt anything like going out grabbing a baseball bat and smacking a ball;

swat you make hitting a baseball sound easy

you're trying to hit a round object with another round object. NOT EASY although im good ( modesty is showing)\

and omfg@ herbs who think that computer gaming is even CLOSE to sports. Its competetive but anything near to sports? NO.

Sports you lose 10 lbs playing ( just saying exagerating a bit)

computer games u GAIN 10 lbs sitting on ur ass all day ( not exaggerating)

hmmm... something like that

Lib3r8tor, just because something is dificult doesn't make it a sport. Spelling B's are dificult, so are math tests, that doesn't make them sports.

And Pymp, I rule at street fighter. Who do you play as?

i play as everybody really. lastest game i have been playing is sf3 3rd strike and capcom vs snk 2. sf3 i like remy. cvs2 i play with tons of people. but i havent been playin much lately cause those games are pretty old, capcom takes forever to come out with new street fighters. i am awsome thougjh i have played in a few tournaments and i know many of the best players on the east coast. you should have been in CAPCOM with us :P

Old school Street Fighter ruled. I used to play x-men vs. street fighter too. I played as Ryu, Wolverine or Guile.

I used to own with Ken. Never figured out why ppl bothered playing with Ryu, since Ken is simply an upgrade of him.

miamijc
04-16-2003, 12:39 PM
Ken was a homo. He shot those little fireballs, instead of the bigger ones that Ryu shot. I think Ken was stronger, but Ryu was faster in the original.

ryu totally owns in every street fighter game. it's like a little joke they do, they always make him the best. occasionally they fuck up and accidently make somebody else too good when people figure out combos that were never thought possible but mostly ryu owns. he is always stronger than ken and akuma and your much more likely to see people playing with him in tournaments.

Prokopis
04-16-2003, 09:37 PM
I was talking about SF2, SF2T and SSF2. I haven't played any other SF's after those :O...

miamijc
04-17-2003, 10:31 AM
Hmmm, I'm pretty sure Ken is stronger than Ryu in X-Men vs. Street Fighter, it's just that his super moves are totally gay (the flaming uppercuts). Akuma is a useless fag.

Kay you are talking about Dahlsim (or however you spell it). The indian guy right? P.S. He sucks :silly:

The few tourneys I ever saw, the top players were all Guile (aka Charlie).

PYMPTYPE
04-17-2003, 11:04 AM
CAPCOM always intended ryu to be the best in every game, sometimes they messed up and accidently made somebody else a little bit better. Who people play with all depends on the game, every game had different popular players. XMENvsSF was so unbalance there were combos/bugs that automatically did 100% damage so nobody really plays that game anymore.
