Sony is well on there way for developing the PlayStation 3, and they are really pumping up the processing speed.
The PS3 is planned for release in 2005, so it will break the Moore's Law rule on processor developement. Sony's chief technical officer says, "Moore's Law is too slow for us. We can't wait 20 years to achieve a 1000-fold increase in PlayStation performance".
This Inquirer article "PlayStation 3 Architecture Revealed (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=7078)" says that the architecture may potentially run parallel processing at one teraflop (16 GHz):
The computers are made of cells, each one containing a CPU, which will probably be a PowerPC, and eight APUs (vectorial processors) each with 128K of memory.
It will run at 4GHz, producing a not inconsiderable 256Gflops, with the cells connected to the central 64MB memory through a switched 1024 bit bus.
It's still not clear how many of these "cells" will be used in the Playstation3, but Sony reckoned some time ago it could be as many as one teraflop, probably making it a four cell architecture.

and it will have fairly mediocre mass-market games like ps 1 & 2. don't me wrong there were a few good games, but in terms of quality the playstation has invariably been inferior to its competition.

That won't be the console's fault. Take it up with the game companies.

LMFAO, check out this site: Games Sneak Preview: Playstation 3 (http://www.misinformer.com/archive/2001/01/15/). It's a fake "ign lottery" for a sneak peak at the PS3.
Here is what the new system will look like:

According to an article on NEWFF Newscast (http://www.newff.com/news/000041.html), Sony will release a virtual reality set for PS2:
Sony has decided that the future is NOW. They are planning on releasing some fancy virtual reality head-gear for the PlayStation 2. How this stuff works, is there is a sort of head-phone set that you wear, giving you a full auditory experience. Then a little visor flips down infront of your eyes, giving you the whole visual aspect of virtual reality.
...this isn't going to do to well. Remember Nintendo's "Virtual Boy" with the red 3D goggles? It is so uncomfortable to use something like that even for ten minutes. It's no surprise that only a handful of games were developed for this unpopular gaming system.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a complete list of US and Japanese games:
3D Tetris, Galactic Pinball, Golf, Insmouse Hotel, Jack Bros., Mario Clash, Mario's Tennis, Nester's Funky Bowling, Panic Bomber, Red Alarm, SD Gundam Dimension War, Space Squash, T & E Golf, Teleroboxer, Virtual Fishing, Vertical Force, Virtual Space Invaders Collection, Virtual Lab, Virtual League Baseball, Virtual Pro Baseball/95, Virtual League Bowling, V-Tetris, Waterworld, Wario Land, Water World
(25 games)

Its all for hype. Remember what they said about ps2? About it guideing missiles etc? It cant even run splinter cell properly. Ps3 will own but when it comes out im sure there will be other consoles much more powerful. I mean ps2 only has like a 300mhz processor and it was released when you could get like 1.3ghz processors :@
