I seem to have troubles adding ranged units into my number system such as HH, Rifles,Archers and Fiends.I have read many things on numbering and follow Aiucards numbering system which works well.Heres my current numbering system:

1- 2 or 3 heroes and all main Melee like Foots or Grunts.
2- Main casters such as Shaman, Priests and Necro's.
3- Secondary casters like Sorcs, Banshees Etc.
4- Seige.

Now if I decide to throw in some HH or archers how do I accomodate them without screwing up my number system or how do you use them? If I throw them in as #2 I have like 4 -5groups which makes it very hard to hit the proper keys without looking in an intense battle. If I group them with casters like shaman and I want those shaman casting Bloodlust instead of attacking it it wont work either because the ranged wont start attacking fast enough and if I use them to attack my shamans are attacking instead of casting BL.

Damn, this is a problem. Anyone know of some very good players numbering system or just some of your own tricks you use to get ranged into your group?

I usually group all casters in 1 group, I use TAB to switch between different casters .. IE Priests/sorcs
If i have a ranged hero like archemage and a melee hero like Paladin or Moutain king
I group the melee with melee hero as 1
Ranged hero with ranged units as 2
and spellcasters 3

If a hero takes alot of damage I group Him as number 4 and make sure he isnt on number 1 or 2 anymore, then i run him to the back of battle where he cant be killed anymore.

Edit : Siege is always number 5 (that way i cant mess up with different races/different siege units)

I never have 3 hero's .......

What gets me in numbering hero's and melee in the same group, or any 2 types of units in the same group is this...
You press #1 to attack with group one, but you control your hero's with F1, F2, F3. Lets say you press 1 and attack one unit. All these units attack this unit, but you want hero to attack something else so you press the F1 key, now you want to attack another unit or unit's with melee so you press #1 again. Now your hero attacks this unit as well because he is grouped #1, but you dont want it to. You have to go back and press F1 again to get him back on the unit he was attacking. This seems to be too much work. It doesnt work to press #1 and then tab to get your melee's selected because as soon as you have them attack, all of group one attacks.
Am I doing something wrong? Do you have to press tab to select the melee's (and not hero) and then press "A" to have them attack or can you do this with mouse?
Hope you can decipher what I am trying to say. Unless I am doing something wrong, I dont believe your can select a number, press tab to select that group and attack with a right click on whatever you want to attack. This sends the whole group to attack. Now if it is a spell then it works, so do I have to press "A"?

well.. either F1 for hero or Use shift to deselect hero and get units to attack something without the hero.

when u have a group and tab u can hold ctrl and give a command such as attack or move and only the highlighted ppl in that group follow the command

so if u have gunts and a hero u can tab so all the grunts are highlighted and hold ctrl and tell em to move and only they move
the hero stays there

just do what you feel comfortable with, my numbering system is very easy for me...makes microing so much easier and faster- try to keep it simple

i usually only have 2 groups :\

I gave up putting Heroes together in a group with Melee units.

Most of the time they are faster then the Melee units, so they will run in front of them, running into the enemy army as first unit, and that's, of course, not good

In fact I move my groups first and then control the Heroes with the F-keys. That way the fight has started, your Heroes are behind and you can see and plan best where to use them (like sneaking behind to kill these lousy spellcasters or whatever)
